Good Will Hunting

The story of Good Will Hunting, a mysterious problem solver had solved on of Professor Lambeau’s challenge problems, which he had believed just a few people in the world would be capable of solving. Upon tracking this person down it turns out to be Will Hunting, one of MIT’s janitor’s out on parole. Will Hunting had previously lived his life battling his immense intelligence while he floated in and out of jail, unable to make use of it. Professor Lambeau had sought to guide Will to make use of his

great intellect, rather than leave him floundering working crappy jobs just to get by. Professor Lambeau had also made him see his room mate: Sean Maguire, in order for him to receive direction to get him to make us of his gift.

Good Will Hunting had combined decent cinematography with a good story worth telling. There are very few shots that I would deem to be of any noteworthiness, much of the story is told through good dialogue rather than cinematic shots with lens flares added in post production. Of the shots in the movie, only a few come to mind to have significance in filmmaking. The shot at the bar would have had many complications due to the lighting and atmosphere of the bar. Considerably fewer extras than had appeared to be in the shot would have to have been used as to not clutter the set with unnecessary people. The lighting of the shot had been well done as it allowed for the actors be be illuminated while the background still preserved the dark bar atmosphere. Much work had gone into the atmosphere of this bar with background noise of the bar most likely added after to keep the dialogue clear and defined. Another shot I believe to have had some significance had been the last shot which the credits overlay. In this shot, Will Hunting cruises down the highway with the camera up high on a truck following him. I believe that this shot was quite a piece of symbolism as Will drive west to a new set of events, all outside the scope of the movie. Much of the acting is used to further the story, with interactions and dialogue that comes off as genuine and fulfills the storytelling role.

Personally I would recommend this movie to be watched away from anyone who knows every line of dialogue by heart. This can put additional strain on a pair of headphones barely loud enough to be audible over background noise and prevent the viewer from appreciating how the lines had been said by Matt Damon instead of Muench. I would have to say that much of how one enjoys a movie is simply down to the environment they watch it in. A classroom filled with many students productively working away on their own film projects with almost mute audio from the somewhat sketchy video player I had watched it on had left me straining my ears in order to ingest the dialogue. The final presentation can simply ruin a movie by disrupting the movie watching experience. Now, the movie itself overall tells a good story worth telling. It may not be a cinematic masterpiece in terms of dynamic shots, but it still remains true to its purpose of telling the story of Will Hunting. Many themes are present throughout such as love, loss, and personal worth and shape the overall story as a whole as they are explored. The overall story is a masterpiece of how Will Hunting receives guiding for the rest of his life, in order for him to access his amazing gift. Much of the situations presented in the movie are revealed with dialogue that comes off as genuine conversation, not something that feels as if lifted off of a movie script. The main characters are well developed, with intricate backstories that reveal themselves throughout the movie. Take Sean Maguire, who in his first appearance to the film appears to Will Hunting as if something had disturbed him in the past. We are then slowly given hints as to what he is truly struggling with, as the film slowly builds tension till when he reveals to Will why he is so troubled. He then goes to great lengths to slowly add detail to the events that unfolded, while slowly counselling Will how he could take away from the events from his life. As far a picture quality is concerned, I would rate it only as adequate. There are not any breathtaking shots, however the shots do a good job of adding substance to the storytelling as well as furthering the profile of the characters. The films character’s may not be the most realistic, however stories of ordinary average people do not tend to be very interesting. Character development is a crucial part of the story, primarily focused on Will Hunting’s changes from the influence of Professor Lambeau and Sean Maguire. This character development is when the main themes of the movie appear, as they are part of the essential part of the story. Overall, while Good Will Hunting may lack any truly beautiful photography, the essential story of Good Will Hunting is a masterpiece of storytelling, with acting capable of delivering such in depth characters within the intricate plot.
